Arches vs Fabriano Artistico: Tested Side by Side

Arches and Fabriano Artistico occupy similar positions in the market: cold-pressed, 100% cotton, 300gsm, and priced at a level that signals serious intent without requiring serious justification. For years the conversation among watercolourists has treated them as near-equivalents. Having worked with both papers across several sustained projects, that equivalence seems overstated.

Arches

Arches has a harder, slightly more resistant surface. Wet paint sits on it for a moment before the paper absorbs it, which gives you a narrow but useful window to move things around. Lifting, removing paint with a damp brush or a piece of tissue, is more reliable here than on almost any other paper. The texture in cold-pressed Arches is consistent and medium-pronounced: enough to catch a dry brush, not so aggressive that it fights a smooth graduated wash. It handles multiple wet passes without protesting.

Fabriano Artistico

Fabriano Artistico is softer in character. Paint sinks in a little more quickly, and the texture, though similar in grade, feels more yielding underhand. Wet on wet blooms gently and predictably, which makes it a particular pleasure for loose, atmospheric work. Lifting is possible but less crisp; the fibres are more forgiving of working and reworking, but they do not give paint back as cleanly. For painters who work loosely and value surface warmth, Artistico often feels more companionable.

Which to choose

Neither paper is better. They are different instruments for different temperaments. If you favour precision, layering, and strong lifting capacity, Arches rewards that discipline. If you work more intuitively, building washes, letting edges go soft, returning to passages with a lot of water, Artistico is likely to feel more natural under your hand. The most honest recommendation is to buy a small block of each and let your own way of working settle the question.
